Issue 25 - Summer 2006

Chairmans Corner

Professor John Evans

I am writing this article with the recent prestigious seminar at Airbus Broughton only a few weeks ago. It was an extremely successful event and highlighted the role that the Materials Network Wales plays in the promotion of materials within the Principality. There were over 70 delegates present with a wide range of backgrounds. The presentations were of a very high standard and extremely well received. They prompted a significant level of discussion and networking. I am very grateful to all members of the Materials Network team who organised the event and ensured its success.

In this Bulletin we move on to focus on metals and in particular, the importance of remanufacturing and recycling. This is clearly an important and very topical theme and we will be following up the articles here with important seminars on both metals and plastics. In particular we have articles from Clearflow on novel metallic cleaning methods, SIMS who are the largest car recycling company in the UK and from Joey Hughes who manages the Accelerate End of Life Vehicle Cluster. In addition, there is a report on the very successful breakfast event on "China - threat or boost to the Welsh Print Industry?"

Finally, I would like to emphasise the benefits of joining our expanding membership. This Bulletin, an active website with a membership section, free access to our seminars and prestigious events and technical help are all key aspects of the service we provide. As a member, you would also have the opportunity of having your Company profiled in this Bulletin and on the website. Why not join and have a say in the development and application of materials in Wales?
