China - threat or boost to the Welsh Print Industry?

Dr Cathy Treadaway presented her report for IRW on digital design and printing for ceramic surface decoration and textiles in China and Hong Kong at a breakfast meeting at ECM2 on Thursday 22nd June. The report outlined visits made to a number of ceramic decal and textile manufacturers, design studios and education and technology training centres, in order to investigate how digital technology is being used to increase productivity in this sector in China and Hong Kong.

The findings of the study indicate that opportunities exist for collaborative, business and trading opportunities between Wales and China. There is currently demand for expertise in design, design project management including branding, advertising, modelling and marketing and technical know-how, particularly in new technology areas.

Dr Treadaway stressed the importance of acquiring a greater understanding of Chinese language and culture if these business opportunities with Wales are to be exploited in the future.
